Motorized patio shades and screens
They drop down when the sun, the bugs or the wind show up and roll back up when you want open air. Made in the USA, built to your opening, installed by our own certified crew.

Everyone loves a patio. Nobody loves the heat or the bugs.
Sun and heat
Solar shades reduce solar heat gain, which can make your patio more comfortable and ease the load on your air conditioning. They also block glare and UV and protect furniture and floors.
Bugs and debris
Zippered side tracks hold the fabric edges and a brush seal closes the bottom gap, so bugs, leaves and debris stay out, even on a sloped patio.
Wind and cold
With the shades down, your patio blocks wind and cold. Add a patio heater or fireplace for colder days.
For winter, see clear vinylPrivacy
Tighter weaves block the view in.
How it works on your patio
A motor raises the shade into its housing, and the weight bar and gravity bring it back down. That is also why openings under about 4 feet wide get a fixed screen instead.
On an existing patio, the housing and side tracks mount onto your structure, and the tracks, housing and weight bar stay visible, sometimes tucked above a header. We measure every opening and set it to about an eighth of an inch, because a shade that is off by more will not close right.
Building a new home or patio? Recessed tracks can hide the whole shade in the ceiling, if they are planned before or during framing. See how building new works. Builder or contractor? Talk to a project manager.

Will it block my view?
In daylight, from inside, the screen is nearly invisible. At night, with the lights on inside, it is harder to see out, and that is worth knowing before you pick a fabric.

Four brands, one honest recommendation
We carry four brands, so we can match the shade to your opening, your exposure and your budget, and we will recommend the less expensive one when it is the right fit. We are a certified dealer and installer for all four. We don't do tomorrow problems. We try to solve those today, and that starts with putting the right brand on your opening.
Universal Motions
- Good for
- One of the four lines we're certified to install. We'll tell you at your consultation whether it fits your opening.
- Wind
- Wind performance depends on the specific configuration. Texas Shade can confirm the applicable rating for your project.
- Opening sizes
- Confirmed at your consultation.
Templar
- Good for
- Often the smart value pick of the four brands we carry.
- Wind
- Templar publishes a wind capability of up to 70 mph for its Knight Shade side-track system, subject to proper configuration and installation. Texas Shade can confirm operating guidance for your installation.
- Opening sizes
- Confirmed at your consultation.
SunPro
- Good for
- Also the maker of the motorized awnings we install, and one of the four lines we're certified to install.
- Wind
- Standard SunPro screens should be retracted before wind gusts reach 40 mph. They are not hurricane-rated screens.
- Opening sizes
- Confirmed at your consultation.
MagnaTrack
- Good for
- Top of the line of the four brands we carry.
- Wind
- Standard MagnaTrack has a published capability of up to 75 mph for short-duration gusts when fully deployed, subject to configuration and installation limits. Retract around 35-40 mph and ahead of storms to help protect the screen.
- Opening sizes
- Confirmed at your consultation.
Wind, honestly
Every brand has a wind limit, and we will tell you what it is. A published rating describes a properly configured, properly installed shade that is fully deployed, in short gusts. It is not a setting to leave the shade down until, so with MagnaTrack and SunPro we advise retracting ahead of storms.
MagnaTrack
- What the manufacturer publishes
- Up to 75 mph when fully deployed, for short durations or gusts. Applies only to the specified, properly configured and installed standard system while fully deployed. Not a guarantee against wind or debris damage.
- When to retract
- Around 35-40 mph and ahead of storms. 75 mph is not an operating threshold.
- Hurricane rating
- No hurricane certification established.
Templar
- What the manufacturer publishes
- Up to 70 mph for the Knight Shade side-track system (2025 catalog), properly configured and installed. Not extended to cable-guided or no-retention configurations.
- When to retract
- No numeric threshold verified. We confirm guidance for your installation.
- Hurricane rating
- Not established.
SunPro
- What the manufacturer publishes
- No complete-system capability established. The manufacturer warranty copy describes a 40 mph rating, which we treat as an operating limit.
- When to retract
- Before gusts reach 40 mph.
- Hurricane rating
- Not hurricane rated.
Universal Motions
- What the manufacturer publishes
- No numeric rating published. Depends on configuration.
- When to retract
- We confirm the applicable rating for your project.
- Hurricane rating
- Pending. We do not claim one.
We keep three things separate: what the manufacturer publishes, what we recommend for your installation, and whether a product is hurricane certified.
Need it tougher?
A Kevlar-lined screen fabric is available as an impact-resistant upgrade. It is an upgrade, not every screen, and impact resistance is a different thing from a wind rating.
Fabrics and colors
Fabric options
Fabrics run from bug screens to high-performance solar screens, in multiple openness levels and colors. More open keeps more of the view, and tighter weaves add privacy.
Dim-out fabric
Choose dim-out fabric for rooms you want dark, like a bedroom.
Shading windows and doorsHardware colors
Powder-coated aluminum housing and tracks come in many standard colors, plus custom color matching.
Remote, app or schedule
Every shade comes with a remote. Add the app through a small Wi-Fi bridge and you can run your shades from your phone, from virtually anywhere, with scenes and schedules for sunrise, sunset and the seasons.
How smart control worksSmall openings get a fixed screen
Openings under about 4 feet wide cannot be motorized, so those get a fixed screen. Fixed screens also cover small openings above or beside your main shades, which is how we make it bug tight. We add them only as part of a motorized project.
How motorized screens workTexas Shade did a great job with our existing porch. They installed fixed screens in some odd shapes as well as 4 motorized drop downs... It has given us a whole new room to use almost year around and we love it.
What we don't do
- We don't do standalone screened-in porches or fixed-only screen jobs. We shade with motorized screens, and fixed screens come only as part of one.
- We don't make manual-crank shades. Every shade we install is motorized.
- We don't build pergolas, patio covers or kitchens, but we do shade pergolas.
- Have an open deck with no cover? An awning may suit it better than a vertical shade.

What happens after you call
Consultation
We come out, ask what you're going for, measure and take photos. There's no pressure to sign on the spot.
Your quote
Most quotes go out the same day, often with a rendering.
Your install date
Most installs happen about three weeks after you sign.
Install day
Most installs on an existing patio are done in one day. Bigger or more complex projects can take longer, and your patio consultant confirms scheduling in advance.
Every project is a custom quote after an on-site consultation. Size, fabric, controls, brand, wind rating and other project specifications all shape the price, and we keep ours fair.
A project includes the consultation, custom design, a custom-built shade made in the USA, professional installation by our own crew, a remote, the app (Wi-Fi) bridge and our 10-year warranty.

I live in Texas and my patio was like a sauna about 5 months of the year and I did not use it. With the new motorized patio screen, it is now cooler and I use the area much more. It has also been nice to use in the fall when the leaves are falling, I close the patio screen and do not have to sweep again.
Kathy GoodrichTexas Shade customer Texas Shade installed six large screens for us in 2014. The material and workmanship were excellent, so when it came time to install screens in our new home, they were the first company I called. The installation was completed last month, and we're just as happy with the results. Highly recommend!

Questions we hear
Can I add motorized screens to my existing patio?
Yes, in most cases. Most covered patios, porches and pergolas work, every project is custom measured, and your patio consultant evaluates the structure. Openings under about 4 feet wide get a fixed screen instead.
How long does installation take?
Most installs on an existing patio are completed in one day. Larger or more complex projects can take longer, and your patio consultant confirms scheduling in advance.
Which retractable patio screen is best?
It depends on your patio, because no single brand is right for every opening. We match the brand to your opening, your wind exposure and your budget. Our brand tabs cover each brand, and the wind table lists the wind guidance we have for each.
What are the downsides of motorized screens?
Openings under about 4 feet wide can't be motorized, so they get a fixed screen instead. At night, with the lights on inside, it's harder to see out through the fabric. Wind guidance varies by brand, and the wind table above shows what is published and when to retract. On an existing patio, the housing and tracks stay visible. Read our take on whether they are worth it.
Can I control them from my phone?
Yes. Every shade comes with a remote, and app-enabled options let you control your shades from virtually anywhere.
Do I need HOA approval?
HOA requirements vary. We can provide specifications and product information to support your submission, but the homeowner is responsible for obtaining HOA approval.
Do you serve my area?
We serve the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, including some lake areas outside the core metro. Not sure about your address? Call (817) 470-0744, or see our service area.
